What will I learn from childbirth classes?
A childbirth class is a great way to prepare for labor and birth. University Community Hospital (UCH) offers classes, or you can take one run by an independent instructor or organization. Classes range from intensive courses beginning early in pregnancy and continuing through the postpartum period to one-shot refresher sessions.
Cost is $75 and you can register by calling UCH at 615-7300. While approaches vary, the goal is to provide you with information to minimize your fears and help you make informed decisions, and teach you techniques to help you relax and cope. Classes should cover:
• The signs of labor
• The normal progress of labor and birth
• Techniques for coping with pain
• How your partner can help you during labor
• When to call your doctor
Classes should also cover the basics of breastfeeding and immediate newborn care. If you're interested, you can usually take separate in-depth classes on these topics, as well as early pregnancy classes. Some childbirth classes also discuss certain childbirth complications and how they might be handled. Most classes show videos of both a vaginal birth and a c-section. All classes also offer a hospital tour. Finally, these classes are a great opportunity to meet other expectant parents.
Child and Infant CPR courses are also offered.
